RIVER CRUISES IN MYANMAR ( BURMA )

Myanmar River cruise

The Ayeyarwady{Irrawaddy}and the Chindwin Rivers are the two major rivers in Myanmar {Burma}. The Ayeyarwady is 2170 kilometres longs while the Chindwin is 960 kilometres. But the distance varies with the water level. During the monsoon season the Chindwin River is navigable for about 600 kilometres but when the water level gets low boats can travel only for about 176 kilometres only. The Ayeyarwady river is navigable up to Bhamaw despite the many shoals and sandbars in the river. There are government Inland Water Transport boats that ply from Yangon to Mandalay and then to Bhamaw on the Ayeyarwady River but passengers must embark at Monywa for their trips on the Chindwin River. Apart from the government boats there are also many privately owned and operated boats and geared to specifically cater to the tourist trade. They can be chartered for trips from Mandalay to Bhamaw and Bagan or from Monywa to Kalaywa during the low water period and up to Hkamti during the monsoon season. The luxury river cruiser “R.V Road To Mandalay”, plies between Bagan and Mandalay regularly but also have make special cruises Monywa- Kindat-Bagan and Mandalay-Bhamaw-Bagan during the monsoon season.
